Arsenal manager Unai Emery has this evening provided an update on the club’s transfer plans, ahead of the close of the January window on Thursday evening.
The last 4 weeks have seen Arsenal linked with a whole host of stars across Europe.
However, while the Gunners have made no secret of the fact that they are indeed on the lookout for January reinforcements, their attempts to actually secure the club’s first signing have thus far proven fruitless.
This comes after Unai Emery admitted earlier this month that the capital outfit cannot afford to make outright purchases as things stand:
‘We cannot sign permanently. We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more.’

‘Between nil and two’
However, despite the financial constraints on the Gunners at present, they nevertheless remain extremely active on the transfer front, with Unai Emery having this evening provided an in-depth update on the club’s strategy entering the final days of the transfer window.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the Spanish tactician revealed:
‘It’s one thing the club is working on, the possibility with different players.’
When questioned specifically on Arsenal’s move for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, Emery continued:
‘I don’t know exactly which players, but it’s players with the possibility to help us, who can play on the wing, right or left. I think any player who can come here and help us is good news.’
On Barcelona outcast Denis Suarez, he added:
‘[Suarez] is the same [as Perisic]. This transfer is not easy and the message is that the club are working on different players. The possibility, if it can be [done], is good for us.’
‘I don’t know [what will happen] because this transfer window is not easy. I know the club are doing all they can to achieve one player to help us.’
When questioned on how many arrivals he hopes to see make their way to the Emirates by Thursday evening, Emery explained:
‘Nil or possibly two. Between nil and two. If they aren’t coming to help us like we want, then we would prefer them to not come. Two because we are looking at two different players who have the possibility to come here.’
‘Enough players who can play centre-back’
Finally, the Arsenal boss was drawn on whether or not the North Londoners intend to reinforce the heart of the club’s defence, in the midst of a recent injury crisis:
‘We can only bring players that we are very convinced will be able to help us with a good performance. We have enough players who can play centre-back in the squad.’
‘The problem is we’re having a lot of injuries in this position. We have enough players. If we brought in another player, and all the other players we have are well to play, then we could maybe have a problem in the future.’
